Age Concern Liverpool & Sefton has a link with a reputable travel insurance company to provide cover for all types of holidays. But as insurance can be a boring topic, we thought you might like to hear some of the strangest insurance claims made by holiday makers over the years.

A father tried to file a claim for a disastrous haircut his teenage daughter got on holiday in Spain. He said she was so upset that it ruined the holiday for the whole family. Needless to say the insurance company didn’t pay out for this one.

A British lad holidaying in Athens was so distracted by the sight of a group of girls in bikinis that he walked into a bus shelter and broke his nose. His insurance company paid for his hospital bills.

But it’s not just the men who are distracted by affairs of the heart. One Australian girl claimed that a failed romance in France ruined her trip and wanted compensation. Her heart was broken again when the insurance firm refused.

After a weekend in Devon, two holidaymakers filed a claim for damage to the paintwork of their car after it was licked by a herd of cows.

Two children, holidaying in Cornwall with their parents buried their parent’s video camera in the sand to “keep it safe” and then couldn’t remember where. Their insurer paid out.

A careless Briton dropped his wallet down a drain in Israel. He didn’t claim for the loss of his credit cards or cash, but rather for the medical bills after he was stung by a scorpion trying to retrieve it.

A traveller to West Africa filed a claim after suffering a heart attack. His insurance company agreed to cover the cost of his medical expenses, but not the cost of his visit to the brothel where the heart attack occurred. They were not swayed, it seems, by his argument that he hadn’t got his money’s worth.

A pensioner, whose false teeth fell out while he vomited over the side of a cruise ship, put in a claim to his travel insurers for new dentures under “lost baggage”.

A holidaymaker in Sri Lanka needed hospital treatment after a coconut fell on her head while she was reading in the shade below. The insurer paid for her hospital treatment.

At the other end of the spectrum are the family who went to Scotland on holiday for a week and were outraged that it rained the whole time. They tried to make a claim, based on the rain ruining their holiday, which was unsurprisingly rejected.

Who wouldn’t want to get married in the Caribbean? Sun, sea, sand and… a bride on fire? One bride’s day turned ugly when her dress caught fire on the barbeque. The heroic groom scooped her up and dumped her in the ocean, ruining both of their outfits. They had wedding cover though, so the insurer did pay out.
