St. Joseph’s Hospice

St Joseph’s Hospice is one of the oldest hospices in the country, founded in 1962 initially to support hospice work overseas. Our UK hospice opened in Thornton in 1974 and, each year, we provide high-quality palliative and end of life care to over 200 people from within the West Lancashire, Sefton, Liverpool and Knowsley areas.

The hospice has 29 patient rooms and is situated within 12 acres of beautiful woodland. Our nurse-led service helps to create a home from home environment for our patients and provides ongoing support to their families. Clinical activity is supported by our in-house Non-Medical Prescriber (NMP) nurses, a visiting GP and a local network of specialist clinical support.

As well as caring for our patients, we also provide a range of support services for families and carers. Our aim is to extend our care to everyone in Merseyside and West Lancashire who needs it.

Why we fundraise

As a registered charity, we do not charge for our care and rely on our local communities and businesses to support the hospice. More than half of our funding comes from charitable giving, including donations, fundraising and legacies. This support is vital as it costs over £3 million every year, or £8,750 a day, to keep our hospice services running. Our Thornton site also acts as the base for a major fundraising operation which includes:

  • Our charity shops
  • Our lottery
  • Encouraging and promoting donations
  • Running events and supporting third-party events
  • Encouraging and promoting legacies

We are proud to be a Merseyside charity and we rely heavily on local people helping us as volunteers – working in our shops, maintaining our grounds, helping with fundraising, visiting patients etc. We are currently supported by over 200 committed volunteers but we always need more.
